Activity:
- Read I Broke My Trunk! to children at Circle Time
- Discussion:
- Ask questions about what happened to Gerald.
- Who has ever been hurt before?
- Did you go to the doctor or just need a band aid?
4. Was anyone with you?
5. If so, who took care of you?
6. If not, what did you do?
- Discuss the importance of knowing what to do when you are injured.
- Reflect back on answers given by students earlier.
- Talk about calling 911 when injured, in danger, or someone else needs help.
- Practice calling 911 on real telephones (use different types of phones).
- Have students think about a scenario. (i.e. Their grandparent has fallen and can't get up; there is nobody there to help.)
- Have a class model come up and “call 911;” the teacher will be the dispatcher.
- When finished, discuss what was said and how something should be handled if in a real situation.
- Stress importance of only calling if it is an emergency.
- Optional: Have 911 dispatcher come into room to have discussion with children.
